Many of the steps involved with perfecting your golf swing technique take time, hard work and proper practice. When you do practice, it is important to evaluate if you are practicing correctly or incorrectly. This is key. Just like our brain, our muscles have memory. Muscle memory is crucial to achieving the perfect golf swing.

What muscle memory does is develop a pattern that is more or less (for lack of better words) automatic. Many parts of our body are used in the golf swing. If we use those parts in a consistent manner, it makes the execution of a perfect golf swing more natural.

For a novice golfer, developing muscle memory through golf muscle training is easier to accomplish than it is for the experienced golfhound who has taken it upon themselves to improve their own swing. The primary reason being, the golfhound, in many cases has developed a poor swing through poor practice, yet it has become comfortable to them.

When asked to change even the smallest aspect of a poor swing, it feels awkward and unnatural. The muscles are telling the you “This is not how we have done this before.” It’s a feeling similar to having a rock in your shoe, without anything being there.When a novice player is starting, the movements the muscles are making are entirely new. They have not yet created any bad habits, and their muscles are more compliant.

A good way to perfect your golf swing is to work on balance. There is an excellent drill where you start by placing both feet together. Your grip and alignment remain the same. The only difference in this exercise is, instead of your feet shoulder width apart, they are now together.

Your knees should be flexed but not bent. At this point nothing should be too uncomfortable; however, once you drag that club back low on the takeaway, you will feel your weight transfer from the center to the right foot. This is a correct response. The feel should be on the inside of the right foot, not the outside.

Another thing that should be noticed while performing this drill that is helpful in perfecting your golf swing is that once the club is dragged back low, your shoulder and hips are now turned away from the ball. This too is correct.

Once you have the club at the top, get used to the idea of envisioning the toe of the club pointed down to the ground with a good wrist cock at the top. You (with feet still together) start your downswing and strike the ball. If there has been a prior issue with adapting a Manila Gorilla type swing instead of a fluent and controlled swing, this drill will certainly help. During this exercise, if you swing wildly, you will become off balance and will not be able to strike the ball.

This foot drill is excellent to help perfect your golf swing. It helps with balance, feel, tempo, rotation, and ball striking. All these items are crucial to achieving the perfect golf swing.

To improve your golf game, you must practice and often. The golf swing is an important part of the game. It is perfect practice that makes perfect.

There is one fact that holds true for all of us: We become what we think about on an ongoing basis. If you have consistent thoughts about what you want to get or have or who you want to become, eventually you will achieve it.

This works, without a doubt, every single time and the only thing that you need to do is to continue to think about what you want until it happens. You will achieve your goal if you desire it enough to consistently think about it, dream about it and talk about it.

Now, before you get carried away with your rebuff’s, let me just say that I am not suggesting you can think of any ridiculous thing and it will magically appear. If you are a native Frenchman living in the South of France and you suddenly get the urge to think about becoming the president of the United States, you need to rethink what you want.

If you are 50 years old, you are no likely going to be able to play rugby for the All Blacks or get yourself into the starting lineup of the New York Giants, unless you buy the team, then you could theoretically put yourself in, but it may be a bad idea.

So some realism is called for; but surprisingly enough, most people vastly underestimate what they are capable of achieving. As a rule of thumb, there are very few limits to an individual with desire. For example, I believe that virtually all amateurs are capable of breaking 80, but the bulk of them never will. It would not even occur to many of them that they are skilled enough.

Virtually everyone is capable of achieving a dream lifestyle if only they would believe first, then set goals to make it happen and never stop trying.

You can program your mind to deliver great things for you. For example, you could teach it the “winners” mindset and to be mentally tough. You could also get your mind to allow you to keep control of your fears on the course or to keep your anger in check on a bad shot.

Your mind is capable of changing your physical swing for you as long as you have a clear internal image of the position you want to achieve, and you are physically capable of getting there.

One of the two very best times to reprogram your mind is at night, right before you go to sleep, as this allows your subconscious to think about it all night long. Your subconscious never sleeps, so you may as well ask it to think about what you want instead of just random dreams.

The other optimum time is to think about what you want first thing in the morning when you wake up. Spend ten minutes imagining yourself doing or having what you want, then carry on with the rest of your day as normal. Your mind will continue to dwell on your morning thoughts all day.

Yes, you’ve guessed it. The most powerful thing to do is focus during both the morning and the night; then you can even have a little lunch time in between to top it off.

Add as much emotional feeling into your imaginations as possible and always imagine yourself as having achieved what you want. If you want to be calm and confident on the golf course, no matter what the situation, imagine yourself doing this as vividly as possible. Get INTO your imagination and feel what it’s like to experience it.

If you are making a swing change, ensure that you have a clear idea in your mind of how the move looks. Then imagine yourself doing it perfectly every time and getting the correct shot result consistently.

There are some fantastic programs that you can listen to which are guided sessions for mental game performance, playing in the zone, getting through slumps and handling pressure situations. You don’t need to know how to do these as they are all guided; so just put the headphones on and imagine away, following the instructions. It is not uncommon for high handicap golfers to get to single figures using these Professionally Produced Programs. You have tried everything. Diligent practice, advice from friends, videos, books has not helped. Your handicap is engraved in stone. The problem could be a scope issue. We all have a tendency to get stuck on a few trees and miss the forest. The more our emotions enter the equation, the stronger that tendency becomes. So here is some good news. Let’s back up and take a different approach. What have you got to lose?

Practice Makes Perfect?

Do you set your sights on a task and practice something repeatedly ? For example, you go to the practice range and hit a bunch of shots with a particular club. You toil away with an iron until you start hitting some clean shots.

The problem is that our brains grow unreceptive to perceived endless repetition. Our brains need some change to remain fully engaged. A better approach is to mix up the practice. Take your shots with different clubs such as an iron, then a wedge, and next a driver. Mixing it up forces the brain to keep reconstructing each swing schematic. The more it keeps reconstructing, the more active it is. This promotes optimal long-term learning. The next time you practice, try bringing a variety of clubs. Mix it up and see if your results improve.

Are You an Athletic Specimen?

The shoulder muscles may not top the list but they do come in second to the core group. The rotator cuff is a blend of four deep muscles in the shoulder. These muscles support bigger more dominant shoulder muscles that support a swing. This will be particularly evident in club speed. Get yourself a set of bands and small dumbbells. Four good exercises for rotator cuff muscles are side-lying external rotations, high-to-low rows, reverse flys, and lawn mower pulls .

Can I Join the 4% With a Single Digit Handicap?

The odds are not great but lets face it. No one is born in the single digits yet some get there. Consistency is one big factor. Make golf a consistent part of your life. Try to play at least twice a week. Focus on course management, putting, and your short game (chipping and pitching). The experience you rack up, the better you will see exactly what each club will do. Experiment with fades and draws.

The Art and Science of Putting . Finally practice your putting. This is a high priority due to the amount of shots that are often lost in this area. Practice with a small number of balls from hole to hole. Set your holes up at least ten feet apart to develop your long-range accuracy. Keep your emotions in check and stay calm during frustrating practice periods. Visualize the exact distance from the ball to the hole. There are many elements to the game of golf and specifically to the golf swing. You have the rules, the equipment, what to wear, where to play, the list goes on and on. But what are the core golf basics of the basic golf swing? What are the essential basics tips to make successful contact with the golf ball and get it airborne? This article covers the basics of the golf swing including grip, posture, stance, backswing golf basics and downswing golf basics.

Golf Basics: The Grip

The recommended golf grip is what is known as the Vardon Overlap grip. It is used by the vast majority of golfers. Here are the basic tips for the Vardon Overlap grip (for right handers):

Take the little finger of the right hand and place it between the index and middle finger of the left hand (leading hand).

The left-hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the right hand.

When looking down at grip, knuckles of the left forefinger and middle finger are visible.

Check that the creases of thumbs and fingers point to the right side of the face and right shoulder.

Golf Basics: Posture and Stance Checkpoints

Body weight in the middle of feet.

Tilt from hips approximately 30 degrees to achieve proper spine angle.

Knees slightly flexed.

Keep back straight. Visualize an “axis line” down the spine. Rotate around this axis line throughout the swing.

Arms hang freely.

Chin up and off the chest.

Stance: shoulder-width for mid-irons; slightly wider for longer irons and woods; slightly narrower for shorter irons and wedges.

Golf Basics: Ball Position

Driver – three balls forward from the center (aligned with the heel of the left foot).

3, 5 Wood & Hybrid (also 1-4 Irons) – two balls forward from center.

5,6 & 7 Iron – one ball forward from center.

8, 9 & Wedges – ball in the center of stance.

Golf Basics: The Backswing

1. Shift body weight to the inside of right leg as the club is taken back.

2. As hands approach the waist, the wrists start to hinge/cock.

3. At the top of the backswing, the left arm is straight and 80% of weight is on the right leg; keep right knee flexed.

4. Shoulder turn—90°; Hip turn—45°.

Golf Basics: The Downswing

1. The first movement of the downswing is weight shift of body to left, then hips, arms and shoulders unwind to impact.

2. At impact, the club is released by unhinging wrists and delivering club square through ball—keep head behind the ball at impact.

3. As body turns to target through impact, arms and club extend down the target line.

Match play is one of the popular forms of competition in golf. The players compete to win individual holes. The player is determined as the winner if he is successful in getting more number of holes than the other.

Match play can be performed by two individuals and is known as singles match play. It can be played by teams of two players with foursomes and four balls. Singles is a popular form, where one player plays against another, hole after hole. For instance, if the first player scores four on the first hole and the second player scores five, then the first player is said to have won the hole.

Foursomes is the most famous form of match play in golf. In this form, two players’ teams play against each other. Each team plays one ball while alternating shots. The team, which scores lower, wins the hole. The United States Golf Association provides handicap allowances for foursome competitions.

Fourball is yet another basic form of golf. This match has two sides, and each side consists of two players. The player plays his own ball throughout the round. Usually, a round refers to completing 18 holes of the golf course. On each hole, the low ball of the two players is the score of that side. For instance in team A, the first player scores 3 and the second player scores 5.Then the score of that team is 3. If team B scores 4, then team A is the winner.

Stroke play , a popular form of golf, is commonly played by professional golfers. The player needs to play the specified rounds with the least number of strokes, to win the game. In the handicap competition, the player with the lowest net scores for the specified rounds is the winner. The player is said to be disqualified, if he fails to “hole out” at any hole or in the case of the last hole of the round, before leaving the putting ground. The rules of match play are different from that of stroke play in golf. The golfers need to be aware of these differences so that they can avoid penalties. The stroke play is a player versus course approach match. In turn, match play is a player versus player or side versus side match. Conceded putts are considered legal. The competitor can concede a putt to the other player at any point. However, conceded putts are illegal under the rules of golf, and they are not allowed in stroke play.
